| The Patriarch Alberto Gori, was born in Italy on January 9th, 1889. He began studying for the priesthood at a young age and took on the Franciscan dress on September 26th, 1907. Four years later, in 1911, he declared his final vows to Franciscan monasticism. His ordination took place on the night the First World War began in 1914 and only eight years later, he was appointed as the principal of the Franciscan College in Jerusalem. In 1937, after 15 years in this role, he was elected as the Custode where he was responsible for Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus and Egypt for about thirteen years. He became Patriarch on November 11th, 1949 and later became the Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem, concentrating his work on education, restoring the churches, establishing parishes and stimulating Rosary monasticism in both schools and parishes. He participated in the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council in 1962 and had as his most distinctive assistant, Father Pietro Madibiel. Patriarch Alberto Gori died in Jerusalem on October 15th, 1970. |
