The Assembly of the Catholic Ordinaries mourns the loss of Dr. Jeries Khoury

STATEMENT – The Assembly of the Catholic Ordinaries mourns the passing of Dr. Jeries Saed Khoury, the director of Bethlehem-based Al-Liqa’ Centre and the former president of the Local Council in Fassouta. Dr. Khoury passed away last Wednesday while he was in Rome, accompanied by a delegation from Al-Liqa Centre, before a planned meeting with Pope Francis.

The deceased was an important figure in the Church of the Holy Land. He was involved in the Muslim-Christian dialogue as well as in the ecumenical dialogue. He dedicated his life for the service of his fellow brothers and sisters despite their religious and ethnic backgrounds.

Throughout his life he released many publications that dealt with the theme of Palestinian Christian presence in the Holy Land. Moreover, he held lectures and seminars which aimed to increase global awareness about the plight and suffering of people of the Holy Land.

Therefore we want to express our deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Khoury especially his wife, his children and the village of Fassouta and the Palestinian people in general wherever they reside. We raise our voices in prayer to God to have mercy on him.

A short biography

Dr. Jeries Khoury was born in Fassouta in 1952. He attended the high school of St, Joseph Seminary in Nazareth before going to study in Rome, where he earned two BAs in Philosophy and Theology from St. Thomas Aquinas University in Rome. Subsequently he went to earn an MA in Theology and two PhDs in Islamic Philosophy and Comparative Religious Studies.

He was the director of Al-Liqa Center for Religious and Heritage Studies in the Holy Land from 1988 until now. From 1996 until 2001 he was the mayor of Fassouta.
