Patriarch Fouad In Gaza
4th February 2009

On Wednesday, 4th February 2009, HB Partriarch Fouad Twal visited Gaza. His previous visit had been on Sunday 21st December when he celebrated Mass for Christmas in the Latin Church of the Holy Family. This was just five days before the launch of the Israeli attach in the Gaza Strip.

The Patriarch was able to see for himself just how much the well publicised destruction of property and physical, psychological and moral harm had led the situation, already grave before the war, to deteriorate.

His Beatitude was accompanied by a delegation of Heads of Churches and representatives of Churches of the Holy Land: His Excellency Bishop Aris Shirvanian, Armenian Orthodox Archbishop, His Excellency Bishop  Abba Mattias, Ethiopian Orthodox Archbishop, Lutheran Pastor Jonassan and Father Michael Sellors from the Anglicans. On the Roman Catholic, Latin, His Beatitude the Patriarch was accompanied by Fathers Humam Khzouz, Shawki Baterian, Ilario Antoniazzi and Michael O’Sullivan.

It should be noted that the Israeli authorities had refused to provide permits for the either the Rt Rev Suheil Dawani, or the Rt Rev Mounib Younan, respectively  the Anglican and Lutheran Bishops of Jerusalem, to join the delegation.

After crossing the Erez frontier post, Patriarch Fouad and his delegation were received by a committee of Muslim and Christian dignitaries from Gaza who accompanied them during the whole of their visit. They went to Beit Lahiyya and Soudaniyya, both of which quarters had been very badly hit by the bombing, as well as the site of the American School which had been completely destroyed.

They also visited the wounded in Al-Shifa Hospital and the Anglican Hospital. Afterwards they went to the Rosary Sisters’ school which had also suffered bombing and finished by visiting the Latin parish of Father Manuel Musallam.
Father Musallam repeated one again his appeals to the Universal Church and the international community for aid. He also renewed his heart felt plea for reconciliation and political unity among the divided people of Palestine.
