HOLY LAND – On the days following the Mass of Thanksgiving celebrating their fifty years of priesthood on June 22, 2019, in the Basilica of Gethsemane in Jerusalem, Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo and Msgr. Aldo Tolotto went to visit the priests and communities that accompanied them from their beginnings at the Latin Patriarchal Seminary of Beit Jala in 1960 until today.

The two Jubilarians began their thank-you by visits with their confreres, Fr. Manuel Moussallam, retired in Birzeit, who was their teacher at the seminary of Beit Jala, and Fr. Johnny Sansour, retired in Taybeh, who was their colleague in the same seminary.

Following this, Bishop Marcuzzo and Msgr. Tolotto visited the Betharram Fathers, then responsible for the formation of seminarians at the Latin Patriarchal Seminary of Beit Jala, and afterwards the Sisters of Saint Dorothea, who participated extensively in the material and logistical well-being of young seminarians.

They later visited the Sisters of the Rosary and the Comboni Missionary Sisters, with whom the two priests regularly collaborated during their ministry – the Rosary Sisters in particular as they are present in most parishes of the Latin Patriarchate in Jordan, Palestine and Israel.

Two Masses were celebrated in the Holy Land on the occasion of this Jubilee visit:  first at the Carmelite Convent of Nazareth followed by a second at Carmelite Convent of Pater Noster in Jerusalem. Bishop Marcuzzo and Msgr. Tolotto were adopted spiritually more than fifty years ago and became tertiary Carmelites while at the seminary. This step was important, said the two jubilarians, in their personal development and in their relationship with Christ.

Msgr. Tolotto celebrated his Golden Jubilee in his parish of Safut (Salt, Jordan), to the joy of the whole community who expressed their gratitude to the priest, accompanied by a great informal agape in the Jordanian way!

Bishop Marcuzzo and Msgr. Tolotto plan to visit other religious communities and have been invited to celebrate their Jubilees in many other parishes with whom they’ve had a special relationship. But the summer break has its requirements …
