Published: June 24 Fri, 2016

His Holiness Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of His Beatitude Patriarch Fouad Twal, having reached the legal age, according to article 401, §1 of the Code of Canon Law. His Holiness has appointed the Very Reverend Pierbattista Pizzaballa, OFM, former Custos of the Holy Land for twelve years, as Apostolic Administrator sede vacante of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, until the appointment of a new Patriarch.

The Assembly of Catholic Bishops welcomes the Pope’s decision and remembers profoundly the great services that Father Pizzaballa made during his service as Custos of the Holy Land. The Assembly expresses its gratitude to Patriarch Twal for all his services during his leadership particularly in the Latin Patriarchate and our Assembly in general.

The Bishops, clergy and faithful of the Latin Patriarchate sincerely thank His Beatitude Patriarch Fouad Twal who has just completed his mission and welcome the Apostolic Administrator with best wishes in his new mission.

On this occasion, we pray to the Almighty for the intentions of the new Apostolic Administrator and Patriarch Fouad Twal, for the Latin Patriarchate and Holy Land Churches imploring the patronage of our mother Virgin Mary that our cooperation will continue for the sake of all.
