NAZARETH – On Friday, March 17, 2017, the celebrated Bible contest of Nazareth for adults was presented by the Annunciation Family Club of the Latin parish at the St. Anthony Pastoral Center. A fraternal and ecumenical moment open to all Christian communities without distinction, from all the parishes of Israel and Palestine
Participants competed as a duo, sometimes in pairs or in groups of two siblings, two friends, two partners, adults 40 years and older. Two duos were each invited to compete on five randomly selected issues, five biblical subjects (on the characters of the Bible, Jesus’ miracles, parables of the Gospel, the great biblical events, or on the sanctuaries and Holy Places). Using another style like that of a competition in the US, the responses were narrative and explanatory, oral and free. Two adjudicators served to assess the outcome of each pair on a scale of 10 points, with some inspirational musical intervals provided by the singing of Mervat Ashqar between each question .Two duos were selected during the evening: Rula Haj and Suzan Matar, Orthodox Church members from Ibellin and Charly and Souad Qattân, a married couple from Beit Jala.
A large audience of more than two hundred followers came to watch the competition and support the candidates. Among the assembled were Patriarch Emeritus Michel Sabbah, Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo, Bishop Boutros Muallem, Bishop Mousa al-Haj, Bishop Riah Abul-Assal, the parish priests of Nazareth and its surroundings, Dr. Atef Abboud (author of “Guide to the Holy Land”, used in the competition) as well as some priests and nuns.
Patriarch Emeritus Sabbah, the Apostolic Nuncio, Areen Daye, Father Amjad Sabbara and Mr. Nabil Totry were invited to speak.
At the end of the final Bible contest for adults, which will be held on May 20, a duo will be designated winner and will participate in a pilgrimage to Rome and Istanbul.
