BETHLEHEM – From Sunday to Tuesday evening, March 5-7, 2017, the priests of the Latin Patriarchate met for a time of retreat at the Caritas Betharram Center in Bethlehem. The retreat was preached by Patriarch Emeritus Michel Sabbah, and on one evening was quickened by the visit of the winner of Arab Idol, Yacoub Shaheen.

A time to recharge and to rediscover oneself, the retreat, for the priests of the Latin Patriarchate, is a usually a one-morning monthly meeting, but the Presbyteral Council provided the priests this opportunity to pause for a longer time on essentials, and so they met for two days at the Caritas Betharram Center Of Bethlehem.

The retreat was preached by the Latin Patriarch Emeritus Michel Sabbah. In all, twenty-five priests, coming from Palestine and Israel, come to receive his ministry. The Patriarch spoke at length about the importance of the spiritual life of the priest of the Holy Land, an importance which he greatly illumined from biblical, theological, pastoral and social points of view. The Patriarch Emeritus also took advantage of the retreat to visit the nearby Carmelite Sisters community, accompanied by Bishop Marcuzzo.

On Sunday night, the evening was devoted to the winner of the TV talent show competition, Arab Idol 2017, Yacoub Shaheen, a young Christian from Bethlehem, to whom the Apostolic Administrator, Archbishop Pizzaballa, presented a gold medal of the Holy Sepulcher. Happily, we celebrated Yacoub’s birthday and that of Fr. Firas Aridah.
