NAZARETH – Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo, Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Israel, made a canonical visit to the Carmel of Nazareth, assisted by the occasional presence of Fr. Jean Joseph Bagara, the Order of Discalced Carmelites’ canon lawyer and expert in monastic life. On Wednesday, February 8, 2017, the bishop celebrated the votive Mass of the Holy Spirit and presided over the regular elections at the Carmel of the Holy Family of Nazareth to elect the new prioress and councilors. Below is the report of Bishop Marcuzzo.
The following are the results of the election:
Prioress: Sr. Marie Agnes of Jesus
1st Counselor: Sr. Rita Mary of Jesus Crucified
2nd Counselor: Sr. Marie Ange of the Divine Heart.
3rd Counselor: Sr. Marie Grace of the Sacred Heart.
Once the elections were completed, the rite of acceptance of the elected representatives, the officially proclaimed prioress and the obedience of all the nuns to the prioress (“Kiss of Peace”) took place. Bishop Marcuzzo warmly thanked Sr. Josiane of the Heart of Jesus for her indefatigable three-year term as Prioress and expressed best wishes to the new prioress and her council. Sr. Marie Agnes, 75 years old, a Carmelite nun for 51 years and a prioress for several canonical mandates, had begged the chapter members not to think of her for this office. But the sisters insisted on having her again as their Prioress.
Immediately after the Thanksgiving Te Deum, a phone call came from Jerusalem. The Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Monsignor Pierbattista Pizzaballa, expressed his paternal congratulations to the new Prioress and her Council. At the sound of the bell, as usual, the chaplain and some neighbors arrived for the “mabrouk” (congratulations) occasion.
There are 14 Carmelites of Nazareth. But Sr. Antoinette is in the geriatric unit of the French Hospital of Nazareth; Sr. Margherite Marie of the Holy Spirit is gaining experience at the Sisters Carthusian Monastery of Reillanne; and Sr. Teresita of the Child Jesus is attending a language course in Ireland.
Also on February 1, in the Carmel of Haifa the regular elections were held which resulted as follows:
Prioress: Sr. Maïra of the Child Jesus (re-elected).
1st Counselor: Sr. Bernadette of the Trinity
2nd Councilor: Sr. Angela of the Eucharist
3rd Councilor: Sr. Joséphine of the Annunciation
4th Councilor: Sr. Veronica of Jesus.
