JERUSALEM – On Sunday, May 20, 2018, Pentecost day, the Benedictine Abbey of the Dormition welcomed many men and women religious who came to celebrate this feast. During this Mass, three young people received the sacrament of Confirmation, among them, the daughter of the Philippine Ambassador to Israel.
The celebration took place at the Abbey of the Dormition, a few meters from the Cenacle , where the Latin communities of Jerusalem celebrate the feast of Pentecost.
During the Mass, two children of French expatriates, baptized a year earlier in Jerusalem, as well as the daughter of H.E. Nathaniel Imperial, Ambassador of the Philippines to Israel, received the sacrament of Confirmation conferred by Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo, Patriarchal Vicar in Jerusalem and Palestine, Father Bernhard Maria Alter, Abbot of the Dormition Abbey since February 20, and many priests from the local communities were also present to concelebrate this Mass.
At this celebration animated by the Latin Patriarchate seminarians from Beit Jala, the three young people, accompanied by their sponsors, reaffirmed their faith before the Apostolic Administrator before welcoming the laying on of hands and anointing, symbols of receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The Mass concluded with the release of bougainvillea flower petals, symbolizing the descent of the Holy Spirit on the faithful.
Franciscans have the right to celebrate only two services a year in the Cenacle: the Washing of the Feet on Holy Thursday and the Second Vespers of Pentecost.
