MAGDALA – Saturday, April 7, 2018, the feast of St. Mary Magdalene was celebrated on the archaeological site of Magdala, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, during a solemn Mass presided over by Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, in the presence more than 150 people from the region and around the world.
It is on the remains of her native village, Magdala, that the feast of St. Mary Magdalene was celebrated this Saturday, April 7, 2018. Usually celebrated on July 22, the Saint is now, as for several years, celebrated the first Saturday after Easter because of the hot July temperatures. A decision made by Bishop Boulos Marcuzzo when he was still Vicar in Israel, and today is the Patriarchal Vicar in Jerusalem and Palestine.
The Mass was presided over by Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, in the Duc in Altum sanctuary – inaugurated and dedicated in May 2014 by His Beatitude Fouad Twal. Concelebrating were Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to Israel and Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine, Father Hanna Kildani, Patriarchal Vicar in Israel, Bishop Boulos Marcuzzo, Father Pietro Felet, Secretary General of the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land and by seventeen other priests of the region.
In all, more than 150 faithful came to the new Center of Magdala of the Legionaries of Christ to celebrate the Saint in a sanctuary, and the town, where Mary Magdalene and the group of women who followed and served Jesus, is the object of the greatest devotion.
