JERUSALEM - On Sunday, June 14, 2020, seven Salesian Brothers were ordained to the diaconate. Organized in the Church of All Nations, in Gethsemane, the ceremony was presided over by Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, in the presence of many Salesians, some priests of the Latin Patriarchate as well as a small number faithful mostly from religious congregations.
The Salesians celebrated on Sunday, June 14, 2020, the Rite of Ordination to the Diaconate of seven of their brothers: Michael, Nishanth, Steve, Lenny, Amit, Albino, and Craig. From four different countries, the new deacons were ordained during a ceremony presided over by Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa.
Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo, Vicar of the Latin Patriarchate for Jerusalem and Palestine, concelebrated Mass, alongside Father Pietro Felet, Father Ibrahim Shomali, Chancellor of the Latin Patriarchate, as well as deacon Firas Abedrabbo, were also present.
A choir made up of ten Salesian members, and musicians led and enlivened the congregation’s song and the Mass was celebrated in English, the language of instruction for the Salesian students.
“The priest does not live for himself,” said Archbishop Pizzaballa, speaking to the deacons. “The service represented by the diaconate is not the service of a servant, but that of a friend who, out of love, decides to give his life. I want to serve you, not because I must do it, but because I love you. It is the service of Jesus that washes the feet and gives us the commandment of love. Also, the day you will be ordained priests, you must remain deacons.”
The Apostolic Administrator received the young deacons one after the other, then approached them to lay his hands on them and to pray for consecration.
