For the second time, the Terra Sancta Organ Festival is offering in Jordan an experience that was common in the early days of cinematography, when films were silent and music was performed or improvised by a piano or organ to accompany the vision with a soundtrack. This is a screening of the film "The King of Kings" (1927) by American director Cecile DeMille, which will be presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy on Thursday, March 16 in the Terra Santa Cultural Center in Amman at 7:00 p.m. with free admission. The Italian organist Fausto Caporali will accompany the screening with an improvised musical commentary on the organ. This film is a masterpiece of film history and the American Film Institute has included it in its list of Top 10 Epic Films.
"The King of kings" is Jesus Christ, whose story the film tells in the most respectful manner, so much so that the captions are literal quotations of the gospel phrases. The film, which cost 2,265,283 dollars, was seen by about 500 million people between the 1927 release and the 1961 remake.
Because the whole film is very long, Italian organist Fausto Caporali (professor of organ at the Turin Conservatory and organist at Cremona Cathedral) will present only the second part on the Passion of Christ, which lasts one hour and ten minutes. This edition of the film, for the first time with captions in Arabic and English, is a production of the Terra Sancta Organ Festival, which debuted last November at the Organ & Music Festival Syria and will be presented on March 21 in the Lebanese Pipe Organ Week with different organists.
