JERUSALEM - Year after year, the Jerusalem International YMCA’s Christmas events bring together thousands of people from different backgrounds and faiths for some of the largest holiday festivities in the city. The peak of these events is normally the YMCA Christmas Eve Concert, which has taken place for many decades in the YMCA’s majestic auditorium. This year, due to social distancing constraints, this event and the YMCA’s traditional Tree Lighting Ceremony have been transferred to the virtual sphere of social media.

The YMCA Christmas Concert

Filmed in the YMCA auditorium and other parts of the historic building, the concert will include a dance performance of “The Nutcracker” accompanied by the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, a vocal performance of "Ava Maria" and "Maoz Tzur" by Achinoam Nini and Gil Dor and traditional Christmas songs by Rana Khuri, such as “Miladak Ya Rabi” and “Al’tarak”. The YMCA Youth Academy Orchestra will play Christmas carols against the backdrop of the YMCA Christmas tree and Prof. Gabi Scheffler will play holiday favorites on the Jerusalem Carillon Bells atop the YMCA tower.

Join the YMCA Christmas Concert on Facebook (click here to watch) for a night to remember on Monday, December 21, 2020, at 7 pm JLM, 5 pm GMT, 12 pm EST, 9 am PST.

The YMCA Tree Lighting Ceremony

For a taster of musical performances to come, please visit the YMCA’s Facebook page to experience their Tree Lighting Ceremony in Arabic, English and Hebrew. Most years this event attracts thousands of people to the front lawns of the YMCA on King David Street, but this year the YMCA encouraged the community to celebrate with them from home. With words of inspiration from the organization’s Chair, Adina Shapiro, and CEO, Rana Fahoum, the event was watched by over 9.8K friends and supporters from across the globe.

The YMCA Children’s Party

For over 60 years, the YMCA has invited orphans from East Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Jericho to a Christmas party on the YMCA campus. Last year, 300 children enjoyed a Christmas show by Roni Rock, and were led on a tour through the YMCA Christmas Market by Santa Clause. This year, the YMCA plans to bring Christmas to the orphans. YMCA staff will visit orphanages in East Jerusalem and Bethlehem to distribute gifts and chocolate while leading the children in Christmas songs and holiday activities.

In the words of Rana Fahoum, the CEO of the YMCA, “This year has brought on new challenges but has also given us opportunities for innovation. In preserving the YMCA’s heritage, albeit differently, we hope to spread light among Jerusalem residents and bring the people of the world closer together. I invite everyone to join the broadcast of the YMCA Christmas Concert, believing that next year we will celebrate together."
