HAIFA - On October 15, 2020, and on the occasion of the feast of St. Teresa of Avila, two Carmelite Sisters; Sr. Marie du Sauveur from Madagascar and Sr. Anne Marie of Trinity from Egypt, celebrated their Golden and Silver Jubilees respectively, at Stella Maris Monastery. A special blessing by Pope Francis was also delivered to them.

The Holy Mass was celebrated by Bishop Boulos Marcuzzo, Latin Patriarchal vicar, in presence of a few invitees in light of the COVID-19 situation.

In his homily, Bishop Marcuzzo spoke about the health situation that resulted from the spread of the Coronavirus and the weakness of man. He tried to cast a light on the positive initiatives that the Church brings forth at present, such as Pope Francis’s last encyclical “Fratelli Tutti” as well as drawing inspiration from the life of Saints, especially the Carmelite Saints, in order to overcome the negative reality that the faithful live. Based on that, the bishop underscored that man should create a “contemplative” dimension not only in prayer, but in all sides of his or her life and transform his existence into a meeting with Jesus.

The Carmelite Sisters also celebrated the feast of St. Teresa of Avila in all Carmel monasteries in the Holy Land, which was also the occasion to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the saint's proclamation as the first female Doctor of the Church.
