AMMAN– On Thursday, March 9, 2017,  A delegation from the Italian Embassy and the Italian Development Agency was welcomed at our Lady of Peace Center to visit the Orthopedic Prostheses and Rehabilitation section of Physiotherapy and the “Garden of Mercy”.

The delegation was led by Ambassador Giovanni Brauzzi, representing the Italian Republic and Pietro Sebastiani, director general of the Italian Development Agency, accompanied by the Chargé d’affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in Amman, Msgr. Roberto Cona. They were received by the Patriarch Emeritus of Jerusalem His Beatitude Fouad Twal, the Episcopal Vicar for Jordan, Bishop William Shomali, Father Shawki Baterian, director of the Center, and Mr. Wael Suleiman, head of Caritas Jordan.

During this visit, members of the Italian Agency for Development were able to see the smooth progress of the orthopedic prostheses and rehabilitation unit and the quality of the services it provides.  Established in 2015, thanks to the funds provided by the Italian Development Agency, this unit has helped people who were dismembered or paralyzed by war or accidents, by providing them with custom-made prostheses.

The tour continued to the physiotherapy section, which welcomes many handicapped children and ended with a walk on the site of Garden of Mercy, a project launched in 2014 by Pope Francis during his visit In the Holy Land,  enables many Iraqi refugees the benefit of work, income, and decent living conditions.

During the meeting, participants emphasized the importance to carry out various initiatives to assist the Iraqi refugees, while keeping in mind the difficulties they face in considering to return to their homes and to their country where they do not feel safe and secure.

Bishop Shomali expressed his gratitude for the work carried out by the Italian Development Agency and for the compassion shown to the suffering of the refugees. Patriarch  Fouad Twal concluded the visit by pointing out that the attention and closeness shown by the Italian Government, the Italian Church and benefactors towards refugees and people with disabilities have greatly contributed toward strengthening solidarity at the Center as in other institutions held by the Catholic Church. This solidarity is a concrete language which everyone can understand regardless of religious affiliation.
