JORDAN – Once or two twice a week, a team from Caritas Jordan and members of the clergy visit approximately 200 Christian inmates, both local and foreign, in 13 prisons across Jordan, providing spiritual, financial and legal assistance that would not be possible without the continuous generous support of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
Since 2008, the Latin Patriarchate has partnered with Caritas Jordan to support Christian prisoners in Jordan, by providing spiritual, financial, social and legal aid, all of which aim to help them serve their time in dignity. The inmates are provided, among other things, with clothes, bibles, medicines and flight tickets for those who complete their sentences. Sometimes, the inmates are brought equipment to make rosaries or a book to learn a new language, in a way to spend their time constructively.
The support of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre has assured the sustainability of the program. It has enabled both Caritas and members of the clergy to carry out their missions in supporting the Christian community in the Holy Land. Since the program was established and in addition to the invaluable aid given to the prisoners, the support has covered the priests’ travel expenses, liturgical services as well as providing volunteers with training courses in order to prepare them to work in prison environments.
