ROME – in early Summer 2016 Cardinal Edwin O’Brien, Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, inaugurated the new website of the Grand Magisterium, in presence of European officials of the order gathered in Rome.
This site available in five languages was launched by the Order’s Communication Department, in conjunction with the Holy See’s Communication Center. It is a new means of communication meant to join the members of the Order, numbered at 30,000 Knights and Dames distributed over five continents, as well as friends and lovers of the Holy Land. On the ancient site, in two languages integrated within the Holy See site, will be kept historical updated information. The new site on the other hand gives prominent place to activities of the Order, projects sustained in the Holy Land, for the benefit of “culture and encounters” which are dear to our Pope Francis.
Introducing the work of the Order
In each language section, videos show the life of the Lieutenancies, which represent the peripheral structures of the Order in local churches, from Australia to Argentina and from Norway to South Africa, passing through European countries where the Order is deep-rooted since centuries. Some articles are translated into five languages, English, Spanish, French, Italian and German. Others are reserved to language sections more related to local reality of Lieutenancies. The important thing, thanks to this site and others, is the need to start a link among the Order members, through feeding their spiritual and brotherly life, calling their attention on information coming from the Holy Land, especially those coming from the Latin Patriarchate and the Custody. The site is meant to introduce the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, the spiritual commitment of its members and their generosity, by renewing the image of this Pontifical institution. All those who are interested in the Holy Land may find in this site an urge to continue to help Christian communities living in Biblical territories, according to a perspective of dialogue and in a dynamic of universal brotherhood.
The Order suggests subscription, thanks to this site, to a Newsletter, which will be forwarded on to registered persons. It is also possible to discover on the new site the magazine Annales, in five languages also, which records every year the major events tracing the history of the Holy Land and the important appointments of the Order across the whole world. Today the Knights and Dames of the Holy Sepulchre, in increasing numbers, are gentlemen and ladies, mostly lay people, who seek to live their baptism in light of the spirituality of the Empty Tomb, to witness the power of the Lord’s Resurrection, devoting their energies to support the “living stones” of Mother Church in the Holy Land. Their model of sainthood is Blessed Bartolo Longo, apostle of the Rosary and the only lay member of the Order to have beatified, who built over the ruins of Pompei and the ancient world a place of worship and social works, sources of hope for millions of pilgrims. A jubilee pilgrimage of the Order is organized at Pompei Shrine, at the request of the Grand Master, next October, in the framework of the Year of mercy.
