His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, will begin a pastoral visit to the Parish of Irbid, Jordan, from Thursday, May 14, 2026, to Sunday, May 17, 2026.
In continuity with his pastoral mission of presence and closeness, the Patriarch continues to visit the parishes of the Diocese of Jerusalem, strengthening communion, encouraging the faithful, and accompanying the living witness of the Church in Jordan.
Irbid: the early beginnings
Known as the “Bride of the North,” the city of Irbid is one of Jordan’s largest and most dynamic cities, located about 71 kilometers north of Amman. Amid its fast-growing urban and academic life, the Latin Parish of Irbid stands as a vibrant Christian presence and a place of faith, service, and community in northern Jordan.
The Latin parish of Saint George the Martyr in Irbid was officially established in 1949, following the arrival of Christian Palestinian families displaced by the 1948 war. On June 24, 1949, the Rosary Sisters arrived in Irbid, marking a major step in the growth of the parish through their educational, pastoral, and social mission. What began as a small and modest community gradually grew into a flourishing parish through the dedication of priests, religious sisters, and parishioners. Among the key figures in its history was Fr. George Akasheh, who oversaw the construction of the current church between 1957 and 1961, helping shape the spiritual heart of the community.

A Living Ecclesial Presence
Today, the parish serves around 182 families and more than 600 faithful from Irbid and the surrounding areas, under the pastoral care of Fr. Firas Ardeh. The community reflects a rich blend of backgrounds, with many families tracing their roots to villages in northern Jordan and to Tiberias following the Nakba.
In recent years, the parish has experienced a strong pastoral renewal, especially through outreach to families and renewed engagement in parish life. One of its most active groups is the Fraternity of the “Immaculate Conception,” whose members regularly visit the sick, support grieving families, and lead Marian prayers and devotions throughout the year.
Youth ministry is also at the heart of parish life. More than 150 young people participate weekly in spiritual, social, and formative activities, reflecting a renewed sense of belonging and commitment among the younger generation.
The parish is also supported by devoted altar servers, deacons, choir members, and lay leaders, enabling the church to keep an active role within society.
