On Thursday, December 19, 2024, the Social Services Department at the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem hosted a special Christmas gathering for women, which hosted 30 mothers and young women.
Participants were gifted homemade gifts made by beneficiaries from the empowerment program to support small businesses. The gifts included cups printed with a Christmas image, as well as chocolates, natural oils, and creams.
Mrs. Dima Khoury, the department director and event organizer, warmly greeted all attendees, highlighting the importance of the gathering in fostering stronger connections among the women of the Jerusalem community and promoting collaboration and involvement in charitable efforts.
In his spiritual address centered on the true essence of Christmas, Fr. Bernard Poggi, Rector of the Latin Patriarchal Seminary of Beit Jala, reflected on the profound meaning of the holiday, quoting, "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory" (John 1:14). He emphasized that Christmas is not about celebrations or decorations, but rather a powerful message of love sent from heaven to earth, filling hearts with joy and peace. "Christmas is the day when God chose to draw near to us, to share in our humanity, and to reveal His glory through His humility," he explained. "Christ was born in a humble manger to teach us that true greatness lies not in wealth, but in the love we give." He urged that Christmas be a time for forgiving those who have wronged us, giving selflessly, and mending relationships with those from whom we have been estranged.
He concluded by encouraging everyone to make Christmas a celebration that lives in their hearts year-round, saying, "Just as Jesus gathered Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the wise men around Him, let us also bring those around us with love. Let us fill our hearts with the light of Christmas and reflect that light in our actions. May the birth of Christ bring peace to your lives and a light that never fades."
Everyone shared their appreciation for this wonderful gathering that united them during this blessed time and prayed for a new year filled with strength, peace, and blessings.
